Selection and bulk edits

Most actions in XLR8 work on one issue or on many. Select the issues first, then use the same shortcut you would use for a single one: S sets the status of all of them, L adds a label to all of them. Every change can be undone with CtrlCommand Z.

With the keyboard:

Keys Effect
X select or deselect the focused issue
Shift J or Shift Down arrow extend the selection downward
Shift K or Shift Up arrow extend the selection upward
CtrlCommand A select all issues in the view
Esc clear the selection

With the mouse:

  • CtrlCommand-click a row to add it to the selection or remove it.
  • Shift-click a row to select everything between the last issue and this one.
  • Click the checkbox at the start of a row.

Select in the right-click menu and Clear selection in the command menu do the same.

To narrow down first and select afterwards, filter the view or search in it with CtrlCommand F, then press CtrlCommand A.

As long as issues are selected, actions apply to the selection, not to the focused issue. The pickers show how many issues they will change, like “3 issues”. Without a selection, the same keys act on the focused issue.

A right click on a selected issue opens the menu for the whole selection. A right click on any other issue acts on that issue alone.

Keys Change
S status
P priority
L labels
Shift E estimate
Shift C sprint
Shift P project
Shift D due date
CtrlCommand Shift M move to another team
CtrlCommand BackspaceDelete or CtrlCommand Del move to the trash

A few things behave differently when the selection is mixed:

  • Status: if the issues belong to several teams, the picker lists the statuses all of them have (same name and kind). Each issue gets its own team’s status of that name.
  • Labels: the picker shows a check mark only if all selected issues have the label. Choosing it then removes the label from all; otherwise it adds the label to all. In a label group that allows only one label, the new label replaces the old one.
  • Project: projects belong to one team, so the picker offers projects only when all selected issues are in the same team.
  • Move to another team: if the move would drop something, such as a project or labels that exist only in the old team, XLR8 lists what changes and asks before moving. The issues get new IDs in the new team; their old IDs keep working in the search.

On the board, Shift Left arrow and Shift Right arrow move all selected cards one column.

Keys Effect
CtrlCommand Z undo the last change
CtrlCommand Shift Z or CtrlCommand Y redo

A bulk change counts as one step, so a single CtrlCommand Z brings back all issues at once. Bulk changes and changes that make issues disappear from the view also show a notice with an Undo button.

Undo takes you back to where the change happened, with the same page, filters and selection. It covers property changes, deleting and restoring, moving to another team, relations, creating issues (the new issue goes to the trash) and inbox actions.

If something else changed the same field in the meantime, for example an agent, XLR8 does not overwrite it. It tells you who made the newer change instead.
