Issues
An issue is one piece of work: a bug, a task, an idea. Each issue belongs to one team, has
an identifier such as ACME-42, and carries a small set of fields you can change from the keyboard.

Identifiers
Section titled “Identifiers”The identifier is the team key plus a number that counts up per team: ACME-1, ACME-2 and so on. You can
type an identifier into search (/) to jump to the issue.
If an issue moves to another team, it gets a new identifier, and the old one keeps working as a link and in search.
Fields
Section titled “Fields”| Field | What it holds | Shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Title | One line | |
| Description | Markdown text, see below | E on the issue page |
| Status | One of the team’s statuses, see Statuses and workflow | S |
| Priority | No priority, Urgent, High, Medium or Low | P |
| Labels | Any number of labels, see Labels | L |
| Project | At most one project of the issue’s team, see Projects | Shift P |
| Sprint | At most one open sprint, see Sprints | Shift C |
| Estimate | Points; the picker offers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8, or type another number | Shift E |
| Due date | A calendar day | Shift D |
| Parent | Another issue this one is a sub-issue of | CtrlCommand Shift P |
The pickers also work on a selection: select several issues with X and change them all at once. All shortcuts are listed in Keyboard shortcuts.
Priority
Section titled “Priority”Priority is stored as a number from 0 to 4: 0 is No priority, 1 Urgent, 2 High, 3 Medium and 4 Low. In the priority picker, the digit keys 0 to 4 pick directly.
Priority belongs to open work. When an issue moves into a completed or canceled status (Done, Canceled, Duplicate), XLR8 removes its priority. Reopening the issue does not bring it back. If you undo the status change with CtrlCommand Z, status and priority both return.
Priority budget. Each team should have at most 1 open Urgent and 3 open High issues. If a change goes beyond that, XLR8 shows a hint listing the team’s other Urgent or High issues, with Downgrade … to lower one of them. It is only a hint; your change is saved either way.
Description
Section titled “Description”The description is Markdown. On the issue page, click into the text or press E to edit it. Type
/ for blocks such as headings, lists and code, and paste images with CtrlCommand V. XLR8 saves
automatically while you type. If someone else, for example an agent, changes the description while you are
editing, XLR8 lets you choose between Keep mine and Take theirs.
Sub-issues
Section titled “Sub-issues”An issue can have a parent. Press CtrlCommand Shift O (Create sub-issue) on an issue to create a child, or CtrlCommand Shift P (Set parent …) to attach an existing issue to a parent. The parent lists its Sub-issues with a done count, such as 2/5.
Relations
Section titled “Relations”Relations connect two issues. Add them from the command menu (CtrlCommand K) or the context menu (right click):
- Blocks … and Blocked by …: one issue has to be finished before the other.
- Related to …: the two issues belong together.
- Mark as duplicate …: this issue duplicates another one. XLR8 also sets its status to the team’s Duplicate status.
The issue page lists relations under Relations, grouped as Blocks, Blocked by, Related, Duplicate of and Duplicates. Click the × on a relation to remove it.
Comments and activity
Section titled “Comments and activity”Below the description, Activity shows comments and the history of the issue in one timeline. Comments are Markdown; press CtrlCommand Enter to send. You can edit and delete your own comments.
Every change is recorded with who made it: you, an agent (by its name), GitHub or XLR8 itself (for example a recurring issue). When someone other than you changed a field such as status, priority or labels, the entry has an Undo button. It restores the old value, but only if nobody has changed the field since.
Copy link, branch name and ID
Section titled “Copy link, branch name and ID”| Action | Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Copy link | CtrlCommand Shift , | https://xlr8.example.com/issue/ACME-42 |
| Copy branch name | CtrlCommand Shift . | acme-42-fix-login-redirect |
| Copy ID | CtrlCommand . | ACME-42 |
The branch name is the lower-case identifier plus the title, shortened. If your instance sets a branch prefix,
it comes first, for example dev/acme-42-fix-login-redirect. A pull request on such a branch is linked to the
issue automatically, see GitHub.
Drafts
Section titled “Drafts”Press C to create an issue. If you close the dialog with content (Esc, ×, or a click outside), nothing is lost: the content is saved as a draft, and the message Saved as draft offers to open it again. Saved drafts are listed under Drafts in the sidebar (or Go to: Drafts in the command menu). Only Discard in the dialog throws the content away, and even that offers Undo.
Drafts are stored in your browser, so they don’t follow you to another device.
Delete (CtrlCommand BackspaceDelete or CtrlCommand Del) moves issues to the trash. Open it with G then X (Go to: Trash). From there, Restore brings an issue back with all its fields, comments and history.
Issues in the trash cannot be changed. After 30 days, XLR8 deletes them for good, including description, comments and history.
Deleting an issue also takes it out of a sprint that is still open; restoring it does not put it back.
Undo and redo
Section titled “Undo and redo”Press CtrlCommand Z to undo your last change and CtrlCommand Shift Z or CtrlCommand Y to redo it. Undo covers nearly everything you do to issues: field changes, creating, deleting and restoring, moving to another team, relations, reordering and inbox actions. It also takes you back to the page, filters and selection where you made the change.
If someone else changed the same field in the meantime, XLR8 does not overwrite their change and tells you who made it.
Recurring issues
Section titled “Recurring issues”For work that comes back regularly, such as “Test-decrypt a backup”, make an issue repeat. On an issue, choose Repeat … from the command menu, the context menu or the More actions menu, then pick a rhythm:
- Every week on a weekday, or
- Every month on day 1 to 28.
XLR8 saves a template with the issue’s team, title, description, priority, labels, project and estimate. On each due day it creates a new issue from the template with the status Todo (or the team’s matching status) and that day as its due date. The original issue stays as it is. Days are counted in the Europe/Berlin time zone; there is no time zone setting yet.
Manage templates under Settings → Recurrences: create one from scratch with New recurrence, Pause and Resume it, or Delete it. Deleting a template only stops new issues; issues it already created stay.
